Blepharoplasty Benefits: Balanced Facial Harmony
Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure that can improve the appearance of the eyelids. It has the potential to reduce wrinkles and puffiness, open up your eyes, and even enhance vision if needed. With blepharoplasty, you can make a noticeable improvement in your facial features. Here are more benefits of getting blepharoplasty:
Age Reversal
Blepharoplasty can help tighten loose skin around the eyelids to give you a younger look.
Improved Vision
The excess skin removed during this procedure can help restore peripheral vision lost due to sagging.
Enhanced Confidence
The results of blepharoplasty can make you feel better about your appearance, increasing confidence in yourself and your looks.
The Eyelid Surgery Procedure
Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) is a plastic surgery procedure that can improve the appearance of aging around the eyes, namely droopy upper eyelids and puffy undereye bags.
The eyelid lift surgery restores a more youthful and refreshed appearance to the eye area by removing excess muscle or excess skin and fat from the target areas, whether the upper eyelid surgery or lower eyelid surgery.
At Donath Facial Plastic Surgery, we provide patients with natural-looking results from our specialized eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) in Cincinnati and Dayton, OH, areas.

Ideal Candidates for Blepharoplasty
If you are looking to improve the appearance of puffy lower eyelid bags and/or drooping of the upper eyelids and are physically healthy and realistic in your expectations, then blepharoplasty may be right for you. Special considerations may need to be made for individuals with circulatory, ophthalmologic, or other serious medical conditions. An ideal candidate must understand that the surgery will not affect sagging of the brows or wrinkles around the eyes, but commonly combined procedures such as browlifts, laser resurfacing, and our VolumeLift℠—through a procedure called LuxeEyes℠ — can address these as well as the dark circles beneath the eyes.
Ideal candidates for blepharoplasty typically include:
- Individuals with healthy facial tissues and muscles.
- Non-smokers with realistic goals for improvement.
- Those without serious eye conditions.
- Patients seeking correction for droopy or baggy eyelids.

Dr. Donath will also weigh other factors like age, skin type, and attitude toward surgery to determine if blepharoplasty is right for you. He will go over the recommended technique, anesthesia, surgical facility, risks, and costs.
Any questions or concerns that you may have will also be discussed. If necessary, Dr. Donath may recommend complementary surgery, such as our VolumeLift℠ –which together with blepharoplasty is called our LuxeEyes℠ procedure– a brow lift or skin resurfacing, to help tighten sagging skin.
Blepharoplasty. Potential Risks
While blepharoplasty is generally safe, it’s important to be aware of potential risks, which may include:
- Temporary vision disturbances
- Swelling and bruising around the eyes
- Sensitivity to light or dry eyes
- Rare chances of infection or bleeding
- Asymmetry in healing or scarring
The Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty) Process
Local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia may be used for both the lower and upper blepharoplasty surgery. Dr. Donath will begin by making the incisions which will be located along the natural lines and creases of the upper eyelids and the lash line..
Working through the incisions, excess skin and fat or muscle will be removed and fine sutures will be used to close the incisions. A bandage may be applied to the eyelids once the surgery is complete.
Recovery TimeBlepharoplasty
Blepharoplasty recovery time can vary, but most patients report a tired appearance for the first few days after surgery. As healing progresses, the tired look will diminish and results will become more noticeable.
Patients may experience some soreness and tightness of the eyelids which can be easily managed with prescription medication. Dryness, itching, burning, tearing, sensitivity to light, and blurred vision may also occur during the first week.
Recovery is a crucial phase. Here’s what to expect:
- Initial swelling and bruising will subside within 1-2 weeks.
- Avoid strenuous activities for at least 2-3 weeks.
- Cold compresses and prescribed eye drops can alleviate discomfort.
- Follow-up visits are essential to monitor healing.
- Most patients return to normal activities within 10-14 days.

Eyelid Surgery FAQs
How much does eyelid surgery cost?
Eyelid lift costs vary and are dependent on the patient’s goals and treatment plan. Other treatments may be combined with the eyelid lift, such as an eyebrow or forehead cosmetic procedure. The price is provided after the consultation along with payment options and affordable plans.
Does insurance cover blepharoplasty?
Because this type of eyelid rejuvenation treatment is cosmetic surgery, it typically isn’t covered by insurance.
What anesthesia is eyelid surgery performed with?
Eye lift surgery may be performed with local anesthesia and sedation or with general anesthesia.
Where are the blepharoplasty incisions made?
The incisions are made along the natural lines and for the lower eyelids, we typically perform the incisions inside of the eyelid where they are not visible, which we call “scarless” or “transconjunctival” blepharoplasty.
What blepharoplasty office is near me?
Whether you live in midwestern states of Ohio, Kentucky, or Indiana, or anywhere else in the U.S. or the world, Donath Facial Plastic Surgery offers blepharoplasty among its services. For a full list of services, please visit our procedures page.
Does eyelid surgery hurt?
Patients may experience some soreness and tightness of the eyelids along with some temporary tearing and burning. Prescription medication can help to alleviate discomfort.
What is the recovery from blepharoplasty like?
Some soreness and tightness of the eyelids may occur after surgery along with temporary dryness, itching, burning, tearing, sensitivity to light, and blurred or double vision. Discomfort can be managed with prescription pain medication. Swelling and bruising may occur and can be relieved with cold compresses and keeping the head elevated. Your doctor will advise you to apply ointment regularly to the eye area to help prevent dryness.
When can I go back to work after a blepharoplasty procedure?
Work and most other normal activities can usually be resumed about five to ten days after the blepharoplasty surgery.
Will I have scars after my eyelid surgery?
For traditional blepharoplasty, the incisions are located in such a way as to be as inconspicuous as possible. For transconjunctival blepharoplasty, the incisions are made on the inside of the lower eyelids and leave no visible scarring.
